The series can be a little slow at times, and many characters are difficult to like, but Pulman manages to keep the viewer focused. I later bought the set and sat down to watch. Takes about 50 pages before you get clear who the characters are, since the same person gets referred to by different names depending on who is talking - but stick with it! An excellent BBC production from the early '70s and from memory the first BBC 2 colour series to hit our screens which stands the test of time and knocks spots off the recent BBC re-make. After the first disc, containing four episodes, I refused to wade through the rest, and will be donating it to the local library. I devoured it in one sitting - less an hour break to take a few mile run and work out with some weights. Just not for me. I am really enjoying watching the series again. Unfortunately, the person for whom this gift was meant is elderly and hard of hearing. But -- this was incredibly boring and tedious to get through. I knew this was likely to be heavy going - and I was not disappointed - it was.
